Jan VON DER BANK (GER) is the new Contender World Champion after racing was cancelled on the final day of the Championship, taking place as part of the ISAF Grade 3 Travemünder Woche in Germany.
VON DER BANK took a ten point lead into the final day of racing on Friday, but with the second discard due to come into effect after race eight, and defending World Champion Andrea BONEZZI (ITA) lying second, the Championship was by no means over.
However the wind never reached the six knot lower limit needed for the Contender and although Principle Race Officer Peter RAMCKE had the 110 competitors out on the water, no races could be sailed.
A delighted and somewhat surprised BANK commented, 'I am very lucky. This is the absolute high point of my career.' The fair minded German went on to say, 'I would have gladly still sailed and would have tried to repel the attacks of my pursuers, however there was not really enough [wind] to start a race.'
BONEZZI, who won the World title on Lake Garda, Italy last year and at Plymouth, Great Britain two years ago, took second place, whilst fellow Italian Giovanni BONZIO claimed the final podium spot.
